Gout Diet: Foods to Eat, Foods to Limit and a Sample Menu

A gout diet does not mean removing every source of protein. Reducing organ meats and oversized meat portions leaves room for eggs, suitable dairy foods, pulses, vegetables and grains. Decide what will replace a food before crossing it off your shopping list. [1]

This guide is for adults diagnosed with gout. Food choices accompany medical care; they do not stop an attack or replace medication. Kidney disease, heart failure and other dietary restrictions require individual adjustments. [2]

How much can a gout diet lower uric acid?

Evidence is insufficient to promise that a particular diet prevents flares or brings urate to target. NICE recommends a balanced diet; the American College of Rheumatology conditionally advises limiting alcohol, purines and high-fructose corn syrup. Dietary changes usually have a modest effect. Genes, kidney function and medicines matter too, so a high result is not proof that you have eaten badly. [2] [3]

Foods to eat and limit with gout

Use the following swaps to plan meals, rather than treating every portion as a guaranteed trigger. Purine content varies between foods. [1]

Food or drinkWhat to changeA practical replacement
Organ meats and concentrated meat extractsAvoid liver, kidney and concentrated meat sauces.Soup flavoured with vegetables and herbs instead of meat stock
Large meat or chicken portionsKeep meat from taking over the meal; agree portions individually.Vegetables with eggs, yogurt or pulses
Anchovies, sardines and musselsAvoid frequent, large servings of high-purine species.Eggs or suitable dairy as the protein choice that day
Sugary drinks and fruit juiceReduce them as everyday drinks.Water; whole fruit instead of juice
AlcoholLimit alcohol, especially beer and large amounts; avoid it during a flare. An alcohol-free drink without added sugar

General advice about fish and heart health does not make every fish an unrestricted choice for gout. Species, portion and frequency all count. Chicken contains purines too: replacing every red-meat meal with a large chicken portion misses the point. [4]

Can you eat lentils, eggs and yogurt?

Eggs and lower-fat dairy are low-purine options. Lentils, chickpeas and beans do not need to disappear simply because they contain purines. Purine-rich vegetables should not be put in the same exclusion category as organ meats. [1] [4]

Separate food weight from protein weight. A peeled 50 g hard-boiled egg provides about 6.3 g protein; 100 g of cooked, unsalted lentils provides about 9 g. Two eggs provide about 12.6 g. These are USDA reference values. Lentil soup contains added water, so 100 g of soup is not equivalent to 100 g of cooked lentils. [5]

Use the boiled egg portion calculator and cooked lentil nutrition calculator for the amount you actually weigh. The foods are not interchangeable in every nutrient, and your daily protein target is individual.

If milk causes bloating, lactose-free milk or yogurt you tolerate may be options. Lactose-free milk is unsuitable for a milk allergy; compare dairy alternatives for protein and calcium when a replacement is needed.

What can you eat for breakfast with gout?

Instead of a sausage or organ-meat breakfast, consider one of these combinations. Adjust the amounts to your needs; none promises a particular urate result:

  • One boiled egg, 1–2 slices of bread, tomato and cucumber.
  • 150–200 g plain lower-fat yogurt, 3–4 tablespoons of oats and a small fruit.
  • 30 g cheese, bread and sliced vegetables; choose a lower-salt cheese if blood pressure is a concern.

Do not remove bread, bulgur and potatoes only to replace them with extra meat. The balanced meal options offer ways to combine food groups across the day.

A one-day gout meal plan

The menu illustrates combinations, not a calculated calorie or protein prescription. If kidney disease requires potassium, phosphate, protein or fluid restrictions, it needs adapting before use. [1]

MealOne optionAnother choice
BreakfastEgg, bread and sliced vegetablesYogurt, oats and fruit
LunchLentil stew, salad and bread as neededChickpea and vegetable stew without meat stock
Snack, if neededA small fruit and plain yogurtA suitable fortified alternative when dairy cannot be used
DinnerCourgettes cooked in olive oil, bulgur and cucumber yogurtVegetable omelette, bread and salad

When eating out, ask whether soup contains meat stock. A vegetable dish, yogurt and bread can replace a large meat platter. If soup alone leaves you hungry, add a suitable protein food instead of shrinking the meal to salad.

How to vary the meals across a week

  • Swap lentil dishes for chickpeas with courgettes or a bean casserole on another day. Neither needs added meat or meat stock.
  • Try a boiled egg one day and a vegetable omelette another, with bread or potatoes alongside.
  • On a meat or chicken day, plan the portion and fill the rest of the plate with vegetables and a grain. Avoid using the same animal protein for every meal.

Water, coffee, cherries and lemon water

Spread water through the day and avoid dehydration. Sugary soft drinks and fruit juice are poor ways to increase your usual fluid intake. Follow any prescribed fluid limit rather than a generic litre target. The guide to daily drinking habits can help with routine. [1]

Cherries are a fruit choice, not a gout treatment. The same applies to cherry juice, lemon water and coffee. ACR found insufficient evidence for a specific cherry-product recommendation and advises against adding vitamin C supplements for gout. There is no need to start drinking coffee to lower urate. [3]

Weight management and other health conditions

If you have excess weight, gradual, sustainable change can be considered; not everyone needs weight loss. Prolonged fasting, crash diets and rapid ketogenic weight loss are unsuitable starting points for gout. Regular meals, adjusted portions and different drinks can be easier to sustain. [4]

For coexisting high blood pressure, consider lower-salt breakfast and DASH meal ideas. Kidney disease calls for nutrition advice based on kidney function rather than stacking two internet restriction lists. Gout alone is not a reason to follow a renal diet.

New severe joint pain, or pain with fever and marked swelling, needs prompt medical assessment rather than waiting for a meal plan to work. [6]

Frequently Asked Questions

Eggs are low in purines. Boiled eggs or a vegetable omelette can fit; decide the amount alongside your other meals and any additional health needs. [1]
There is no general need to exclude pulses. They can replace some meat, with portions adapted to your plan. Kidney-related restrictions need separate assessment. [4]
Suitable dairy foods can fit. Choose plain, unsweetened products; kefir is not a proven treatment for gout. Milk allergy or other restrictions require alternatives. [1]
No food is proven to stop a flare immediately. Follow your clinician’s treatment plan and seek assessment for new or worsening pain. Dietary advice does not replace medical treatment. [6]
No. Whole fruit is a different choice from sugary drinks or large amounts of juice. Eat usual portions, and do not turn cherries into an unlimited cure. [4]
A one-week menu is not a basis for stopping medication. Your clinician manages urate monitoring and medicines; food choices support long-term care. [2]
