Dietitian's Tips for Consuming Arrowroot Flour

  • Metabolic Impact: Arrowroot flour is digested quickly in the stomach and intestines due to its fine texture, which means it can raise blood sugar noticeably if consumed in large amounts. Keeping portions in check helps avoid sharp insulin spikes and supports more stable energy levels throughout the day.
  • Consumption Advice: Arrowroot flour works well as a natural thickener in soups, sauces, and desserts, and just 1–2 teaspoons are usually enough to achieve the desired consistency. For gluten-free baking, blending it with other flours like rice flour or tapioca improves both texture and nutritional balance.
  • Things to Watch Out For: Since arrowroot flour consists almost entirely of carbohydrates, it provides very little protein or fat, making it nutritionally incomplete when used alone. It also loses its thickening ability when exposed to prolonged high heat, so adding it to hot dishes right before turning off the stove gives the best results.
  • Exercise Equivalent: Around 16 grams of arrowroot flour (approximately 57 kcal) can be burned off with about 13 minutes of brisk walking at a moderate pace. Someone doing light resistance training would need roughly 10 minutes of activity to offset the same calorie amount.
