Calories in the lentil diet burger

The lentil, carrot and oat burger reference supplies about 499 calories per 335 g, including bread and yogurt sauce. That portion contains 17.54 g protein and 8.91 g fibre. A smaller 200 g serving supplies about 298 calories and 10.47 g protein. The name “diet burger” does not guarantee a small meal: the combined amount of bread, patty and sauce matters.

How the patty and sauce are made

The source recipe combines cooked lentils with oats, onion, ginger and grated carrot that has been cooked until its excess moisture evaporates. The patties are shaped and cooked in olive oil, then served in bread with lettuce and a yogurt, lemon and mint sauce. The yogurt makes the complete serving different from a vegan burger.

Reducing the carrot's moisture helps the mixture hold together. Adding more oats to stiffen a wet mixture or pouring extra oil into the pan changes the nutrition as well as the texture. The cooked lentil quantity should not be replaced with the same weight of dry lentils.

Counting bread, sauce and sides

Bread and yogurt sauce are already included in the reference, so adding them again would double-count part of the meal. Serving the patty with grilled vegetables instead of bread creates a different dish. The exact bread quantity is needed before subtracting a calorie allowance from the original serving. Fries, additional sauce and a drink are separate additions.

A weighed 150 g portion works out at about 223 calories, 7.85 g protein and 3.99 g fibre. When weighing a smaller serving, include all the components you will eat and exclude the plate. Reducing just one component is not equivalent to scaling down the complete recipe proportionally.

The open-faced meat diet hamburger uses a meat patty and reduced-fat kashar. Its 165 g serving provides about 220 kcal. Comparing that with the lentil burger’s 335 g example by the word “diet” or by counting one burger overlooks both the recipe and the amount eaten.
