Air-popped popcorn: a cup is much lighter than 100 grams

Plain air-popped popcorn has 387 calories per 100 grams. The USDA cup weighs just 8 grams, giving 31 calories per cup or 93 for three cups weighing 24 grams. These are popped, edible weights without added oil or salt.

How much is in a bowl, handful or bucket?

Bowl size, kernel expansion and how tightly the container is filled all change the weight. Zero the empty bowl on a scale and weigh the popcorn you intend to eat. A 16-gram amount provides 62 calories; 30 grams provides 116. A cinema bucket does not have a universal calorie count.

Dry kernels weighed before popping are not the same measure as popped corn. When you add oil to a whole batch, divide that added ingredient across the actual portions rather than assigning the whole pan's oil to one bowl.

Is air-popped popcorn suitable while losing weight?

It can be an everyday snack if the portion suits the rest of your eating. Put some in a bowl before settling down with it; a large shared container makes amounts harder to track. Eating it at night does not determine weight gain by itself, and popcorn has no special weight-loss action.

Three source cups, 24 grams, provide 3.48 grams of fibre and 3.11 grams of protein. An active person can enjoy it too, but that small serving is not a protein-rich recovery meal on its own. If larger fibre portions cause discomfort, make gradual changes to the amount you eat rather than forcing a bigger bowl.

Does air-popped mean fat-free?

No added oil does not mean zero fat. Corn naturally contributes 4.54 grams of fat per 100 grams, or 1.09 grams in the 24-gram serving. Use an air popper according to its instructions; do not add ingredients the appliance is not designed for.

Butter, oil, caramel and flavoured coatings change the calculation. The fat and sodium in cheese-flavoured popcorn should not be replaced with the plain-popcorn figures. Microwave popcorn is a preparation category, not a guarantee about ingredients. Treat spicy Patos corn chips as a separate product with its own bag weight and label. Compare the actual serving weight, oil, sugars and salt on the packet before using the plain-popcorn figures.
