Red wine vinegar: count the dressing, not just the vinegar

Red wine vinegar is a condiment, not a glass of red wine. Its low energy content does not make an oil-based dressing equally low in calories.

Calories per teaspoon and tablespoon

The USDA reference lists 19 kcal per 100 g. A 14.9 g reference tablespoon gives 3 kcal; a 5 g teaspoon gives 1 kcal. These are source weights, not proof that every spoon holds the same amount or that 100 ml always weighs 100 g. [1]

Count oil, honey or sugar separately when making a dressing. Vinegar does not cancel the energy in oil. If you prepare a batch but use only part of it, calculate the amount of dressing actually eaten. The tablespoon calculation for low-calorie blue cheese dressing is a separate example for measuring a creamy dressing; vinegar’s table does not describe that sauce.

Using it in food and adjusting the sharpness

Try small amounts in salads, pulse dishes or marinades, tasting before adding more. If the flavour is too sharp, increase the unseasoned part of the dish or thin a suitable sauce with water. Sugar can mask sourness, but it does not remove the acid and changes the calorie total.

Balsamic products, rice vinegar and sweetened dressings are different foods. Check the label, especially on thick glazes. Colour or price alone cannot identify a single healthiest vinegar. The guide to using balsamic vinegar in food explains its sweet-sharp flavour and distinction from glaze; red-wine-vinegar calories cannot be transferred to balsamic.

Should you drink it for weight loss?

A nutrient table does not establish a fat-burning drink or a daily treatment dose. Do not use vinegar instead of meals. Frequent, prolonged acid contact can erode tooth enamel, so holding vinegar in the mouth or sipping it throughout the day is not a good habit. Small culinary amounts with meals make more sense. If it worsens heartburn, do not force yourself to keep using it. [2]
