Apple Jam

8 g

Calculation basis: Diyetkolik recipe estimate for apple jam with sugar, water, lemon and spices: 140.56 kcal per 125 g. The amount of water left after cooking can vary, so this is not a universal homemade or commercial jam value.

Values are calculated from a 100 g basis. The product, recipe and serving amount can change the result. See the food-specific notes below for the reference used.

Weigh the spoonful you use

In this apple-jam recipe example, 20 g provides about 22 kcal. The source's 8 g spoonful is about 9 kcal, while its 12 g spoonful provides 13 kcal. A heaped spoon or one containing large apple pieces may weigh more; these are weighed examples, not universal spoon sizes.

A thicker jam has less water per gram

The recipe uses peeled, cored apples, sugar, water, lemon, cinnamon and a clove. Water evaporates during cooking while the sugar remains in the pan. A thick, long-cooked jam can therefore have a different value per 100 g from a more fluid version.

The quince-jam reference gives 282 kcal per 100 g, compared with about 112 kcal for this apple jam. The fruit name alone does not explain the difference: sugar in the recipe and retained water also matter.

Apple compote is weighed with its sweetened liquid as well as the fruit. A bowl of compote should not be entered using a thick jam’s gram-based values.

Count what goes under the jam

The roughly 22 kcal in 20 g of this jam does not include bread or butter. Measure the jam separately when calculating breakfast. Sugar is an ingredient in this recipe: homemade apple jam is not automatically sugar-free. Its total-sugars value is unavailable, so the carbohydrate figure has not been relabelled as sugar.
