Values are calculated from a 100 g basis. The product, recipe and serving amount can change the result. See the food-specific notes below for the reference used.

One candy apple is not a fixed portion

Both the fruit and its sugar coating count. The 214 g recipe example used here provides about 337 kcal. Half of that same example, 107 g, provides about 169 kcal; 100 g provides 158 kcal. A different apple size or coating thickness changes the total per piece.

The coating adds to the fruit

The source recipe uses apples, sugar, water, lemon and food colouring. Added sugar in the coating is eaten alongside the apple's naturally occurring sugars. Total sugars are not supplied by the recipe reference and cannot be inferred from total carbohydrate.

The edible-weight calculation for a fresh Golden Delicious apple covers skin and flesh, without a sugar coating. Once coated, the weighed amount belongs to a different dessert.

For crisp apple chips made only from apples, water is removed without adding sugar. Dried fruit and sugar-coated fresh fruit therefore need separate nutrition entries.

Leave the stick and core out

Weigh the fruit and coating you will eat, excluding the stick and core. Sharing half of the same candy apple reduces the amount eaten. Choosing a smaller-looking apple does not necessarily halve the calories, because its coating may be thicker.
