110 kcal in 28 g of apple chips

The example here is plain, baked Bare Crispy Reds Apple Chips. The manufacturer's 28 g serving provides 110 kcal, 27 g carbohydrate, 20 g total sugars and 4 g fibre. A 14 g half portion provides 55 kcal, while 56 g provides 220 kcal. Thin slices can look deceptively light, so weighing a portion once helps make sense of a handful.

Only apples does not mean sugar-free

The selected product lists apples as its only ingredient and declares 0 g added sugars. It still contains 20 g of the apple's own sugars per 28 g. Drying removes water, concentrating nutrients and energy into a smaller weight. Sugar-coated, cinnamon-flavoured or fried versions require their own labels.

The generic soft dried-apple reference is a different preparation. Its ring weight and moisture content do not establish a handful or slice measure for these crisp chips.

A whole candy apple is a different preparation: fruit sugars and the added coating both contribute. The no-added-sugar declaration for these apple-only chips cannot be transferred to that dessert.

Calculating a homemade batch

The starting weight of apples is not enough to calculate a homemade chip portion; you also need the finished weight after drying. Two batches dried to different levels may not have the same values per 100 g. Weigh chips after drying when adding them to yogurt or oats. A 14 g portion of this named product adds 55 kcal, excluding yogurt and other ingredients.

A 150 g amount of raw peeled apple provides 72 kcal. Without measuring how much finished chip weight remains after drying that apple, do not treat the starting 150 g as a chip serving.

Olive-oil baked apple slices are a separate recipe served soft. Do not treat them as dried crisp chips and apply this product’s label.

Declared zeros for protein and fat are rounded label values, not proof of absolute absence. The 100 g column is scaled from that rounded serving. Home-dried apples may have a different final moisture content.
