Dardanel crispy sardines: portions from a 400 g pack

A 100 g portion of Dardanel crispy sardines provides 252 kcal and 11.8 g protein, including the coating. The referenced 400 g pack contains 1008 kcal. Dividing it into four equal weights gives four 100 g portions; the pack is not automatically a single serving.

How much of the product is sardine?

The ingredient list declares 45% sardine. Wheat flour, vegetable oils and other coating ingredients make up the rest. A 150 g portion provides 378 kcal, 17.7 g protein and 27.15 g carbohydrate. The weight includes coating, so a plain-sardine entry would describe a different food.

Tomato-sauce sardines need their own entry when chosen instead of the frozen coated product. The canned preparation includes its sauce; the crispy product includes its coating.

Weighing before and after cooking

Use the amount taken from the frozen pack for this calculation. A 150 g portion can weigh less after cooking as water is lost; its cooked weight is not interchangeable with the frozen product's weight. Oil brushed onto the pieces or added to a pan is an additional ingredient. The amount poured into the pan does not establish how much was absorbed.

The supplier says to cook from frozen, not to eat the product cold, and does not recommend microwave cooking. Follow the time and temperature on your own pack. Homemade breadcrumb-coated fish has a separate recipe and should not inherit the branded panel.

Salt, sauces and the sugars declaration

The product contains 1.3 g salt per 100 g, or 1.95 g in 150 g. Ketchup, tartar sauce and pickles contribute their own salt when added to the meal. Although the panel declares 0 g sugars, sugar appears in the ingredient list: “no added sugar” would be an inaccurate description. Wheat flour is an ingredient, not merely a possible trace.

Read the allergen label for the coating as well: being able to eat fish does not establish that wheat-containing coating is suitable.

For the 300 g Dardanel calamari product, an equal 150 g provides 273 kcal and 3 g salt. Compared with crispy sardines at 378 kcal and 1.95 g salt, lower energy does not mean lower salt.
