Calories in commercially prepared Dutch apple pie

The USDA reference for commercially prepared Dutch apple pie gives 290 calories per 100 grams. It describes the whole dessert, including pastry and apple filling. It is not a table for apples alone or canned apple pie filling.

How many calories are in a slice?

The source slice weighs 137 grams and provides 397 calories. A smaller, weighed 75-gram piece provides 218. A slice does not have a universal weight: pie diameter and cut thickness matter, so do not assume every slice weighs 137 grams.

When a packaged pie states both serving weight and nutrition, use them together. A homemade pie needs its own ingredient totals and finished baked weight. The banana cream pie recipe calculation likewise includes both crust and filling. Ice cream, whipped cream and sauces are separate additions to this calculation. The 125 g and 117 g blueberry-pie slices listed for different diameters also illustrate why a slice fraction does not define its weight; these are separate product references.

Does the apple filling make it low in sugar?

Per 100 grams, the reference contains 44.54 grams of carbohydrate, 22.02 grams of total sugars and 11.5 grams of fat. The 137-gram source slice contains about 30.17 grams of sugars and 15.76 grams of fat. The record does not separate sugars from apples from sugars added in the recipe.

Fibre is 1.6 grams and protein 2.17 grams per 100 grams. Including apples does not make the pie nutritionally equivalent to fresh fruit. Assess the whole piece you eat, rather than only the fruit named in the dessert. The filling and pastry explanation for apple croissants likewise shows why an apple pastry cannot be calculated from apples alone.

Dutch, homemade and other apple pies

In American recipes, Dutch apple pie is distinguished by a crumb topping made with flour, sugar and fat instead of a second pastry crust, as illustrated by King Arthur’s streusel-topped recipe. Topping and filling amounts still vary, so the style name does not establish a fixed calorie value or portion weight. This historical generic record cannot stand in for a current branded pie or every homemade recipe.

For weight management, setting aside the amount you intend to eat is more useful than treating the dessert as universally forbidden or unrestricted. For allergies, read the pastry and filling ingredients. A cholesterol figure cannot establish that the product is free of milk or eggs.

In the homemade apple pie example, chilled dough is grated over a filling of raw grated, drained apple. It is a separate recipe from crumb-topped Dutch apple pie and uses its own slice calculation.
