Count the sauce you pour

A 50 g amount of Dr. Oetker dark chocolate sauce prepared with milk according to the manufacturer provides 72 calories, 10.5 g carbohydrate and 9.5 g sugars. A thinner coating weighing 20 g adds 29 calories and 3.8 g sugars. Cake, ice cream or fruit underneath is separate.

Adding 20 g of this sauce to 50 g plain vanilla ice cream gives about 132 kcal: 103.5 from the ice cream and 28.6 from the sauce. A cone or biscuit is outside that example.

The 122 g pack contains powder

The manufacturer combines the 122 g powder with 500 ml milk, brings it to the boil while stirring and cooks it for a further 2–3 minutes. Stirring occasionally as it cools helps prevent a skin. The powder weight is not the weight of the finished sauce.

The dry powder provides 368 calories per 100 g, while the prepared sauce provides 143. Milk dilutes the powder into a larger amount of sauce. To calculate a whole pan, either add the powder and your milk separately or, for a matching preparation, weigh the finished sauce and use the prepared panel.

Dark flavour does not mean low sugar

Sugar comes first in the ingredient list, alongside cocoa, starch and 0.2% dark chocolate powder. A 50 g prepared amount contains 1.3 g saturated fat.

Water or a plant drink changes the taste, consistency and nutrition. The milk-prepared panel cannot simply be carried over. The manufacturer also warns of possible milk and tree-nut traces; the recipe made with milk contains milk in any case.

Dr. Oetker’s regular chocolate sauce also declares 9.5 g sugars per 50 g prepared sauce. The darker flavour does not mean less sugar in this comparison. The prepared gluten-free sauce calculation describes another formula; gluten-free does not mean free of sugar or milk.

Source note: values come from the prepared-product column on the manufacturer’s Turkish dark-sauce page. Milk fat percentage and final cooked yield are not specified and were not assumed. Fibre and undeclared micronutrients remain unknown.
