A multigrain English muffin is a small round bread

Calories in one English muffin

The USDA mixed-grain English muffin reference, which includes granola varieties, lists one muffin as 66 g. Untoasted, that amount provides 155 kcal; half, 33 g, provides 78 kcal. One hundred grams provides 235 kcal. This is the bread split through the middle, not a sweet cake baked in a paper case. [1]

The 66 g size is a reference measure, not a promise about every brand. Do not apply it directly to a light product labelled 100 calories or to a Thomas muffin of another weight. Use the actual pack or weigh the bread. A multigrain hamburger bun has a different reference weight per piece too.

The plain English-muffin reference instead uses a 57 g unit. Logging this 66 g mixed-grain muffin as that unit would change both the weight and the food definition.

What happens with toasting and toppings?

Toasting the same plain muffin does not remove its energy, though water loss can change its weight. For unbaked mixed-grain biscuit dough, calculation starts with the raw dough weight instead. Using its weight before toasting keeps the calculation simpler. The same distinction applies when toasting sliced bread: losing water does not mean losing the slice’s calories. Butter, jam, egg or cheese each adds its own contribution. A muffin-based breakfast is more than the calories in the bread alone.

Does multigrain mean wholegrain?

More than one grain does not mean that every grain is whole. Read the ingredients alongside the fibre declaration. The reference 66 g muffin contains 30.56 g carbohydrate, 1.85 g fibre and 6.01 g protein. Its fibre content should not be used for every product marketed as high-fibre.

Egg or cheese and vegetables can accompany it at breakfast, with their amounts counted too. If you count carbohydrate, track weight as well as the number of muffins. A personal diabetes portion cannot be determined from the word “multigrain”.
