Biscolata Minis Hazelnut: calculating a small piece

This reference describes the 117 g, 18-piece pack of milk-chocolate-coated hazelnut-cream wafers. Its supplier panel gives 531 calories per 100 g. A different 493-calorie Minis formula on the manufacturer's site has not been blended into these figures. Match both the pack size and nutrition panel to the product you have.

One piece, three pieces and the whole pack

Dividing 117 g by 18 gives an average piece weight of 6.5 g, or approximately 35 calories. Individual pieces have not been weighed here. Three average pieces total 19.5 g, 104 calories and 6.4 g sugars. The complete pack contains 621 calories; the word “mini” describes the pieces rather than making the whole pack a small serving.

Splitting the pack into six equal amounts gives that same 19.5 g portion. Weigh broken pieces instead of trying to reconstruct a piece count. Other weighed amounts can be calculated from the same per-100-g panel. For a single-pack rolled wafer, use the separate 27.5 g Nirvana Bitter Roll calculation; that pack weight is not the weight of one Minis piece.

The biscuit count in a Mood cup needs a different approach: no verified piece count is supplied for its 125 g pack. Do not transfer the Minis average of 6.5 g to Mood; use the total weight eaten.

How much of it is hazelnut?

The formula is 43% hazelnut cream, with hazelnuts making up 9% of that cream. Multiplying the percentages gives approximately 3.87% hazelnuts in the whole product. Those percentages cannot be read as 43% whole nuts. A 19.5 g wafer portion therefore cannot be logged as 19.5 g hazelnuts; it also contains chocolate, wafer and the cream's other ingredients. For comparison, the 16% declaration on Eti double-roasted hazelnut chocolate describes hazelnuts in the whole product, not a percentage inside its cream.

The 43% hazelnut cream in milk-chocolate Ece likewise does not mean 43% whole nuts; that product separately declares 8% whole hazelnut. Seeing the number 43 on both products does not establish equal nut content or nutrition.

Reading sugars and fat at the amount you eat

Three average pieces provide about 5.64 g fat, 3.47 g saturated fat and 1.44 g protein. Setting aside an amount before eating makes it easier to keep track of a snack from a shared or open pack. Drinks and other foods served alongside it need their own calculation.

Supplier label and allergens

The figures come from the supplier listing for the 117 g, 18-piece product. It contains milk, soy, hazelnuts and wheat/gluten, with trace warnings for other nuts, peanuts, sesame and eggs. Store in a cool, dry place. Undeclared micronutrients, including calcium, have not been estimated.
