Vegetable juice portions and labels

This page uses a canned, ready-to-drink vegetable juice cocktail as its reference. Per 100 g it provides 22 kcal, 0.5 g fiber and 169 mg sodium. A home blend or a particular bottled brand may have a different recipe.

How much is a glass?

The source cup weighs 253 g and provides about 56 kcal, 9.79 g carbohydrate, 7.19 g sugars, 1.27 g fiber and 428 mg sodium. A weighed 200 g provides 44 kcal and 338 mg sodium. Do not automatically equate grams with milliliters: use the volume consumed with a label stated per 100 ml, or a weighed amount with this gram-based reference.

Comparing lower-sodium options

Compare bottles at the same 100 ml or serving volume. A small serving on one large bottle can look deceptively low next to a full-glass figure on another. The 338 mg sodium in this reference's 200 g amount is equivalent to about 0.85 g salt; sodium and salt are not the same numerical quantity. A specific product such as low-sodium V8 cannot be calculated from this generic table.

For comparison, 200 g of the generic tomato-juice reference contains 506 mg sodium, versus 338 mg here. The 168 mg difference applies to these two records; it does not establish that every tomato juice is saltier than every blend.

The volume panel for Dimes 100% tomato juice declares 0.1 g salt per 100 ml. Switching between a vegetable blend and a single-vegetable drink does not establish a salt ranking by name; compare current labels at equal volumes.

Does it replace whole vegetables?

A 200 g drink provides about 1 g fiber. Do not assume a glass supplies as much fiber as a salad or a serving of cooked vegetables. The chewable structure and portion also differ. Blending whole vegetables with their pulp, extracting juice and discarding pulp, and using a strained packaged drink are different preparations.

Using it in soup or sauce

Include the drink's sodium when adding it to a recipe. If 200 g of this reference drink goes into a sauce divided into four equal servings, the juice alone contributes 11 kcal and about 85 mg sodium to each. Vegetable juice cocktail is not the same food as vegetable stock or bouillon.

Source note

Composition follows USDA SR28 11578, canned vegetable juice cocktail. Low-sodium, fruit-containing and branded drinks need their own values. The reference vitamin C amount does not apply to every homemade blend.
